This collection is the result of many years of close listening, enjoyment, and pursuit of an accurate representation of what Mr. Monroe’s music would look like on the printed page. Throughout the book you’ll find transcriptions ranging from his earliest days with the Monroe Brothers to some of his last sessions with Jimmy Campbell. In my study I’ve come to realize that there are four separate states of Monroe’s playing during his career, each of which is uniquely Monroe—his personality is demonstrated throughout his solos.
These transcriptions were originally handwritten by myself in probably 25 notebooks scattered throughout the house. I decided about a year ago, with the use of modern software, to compile my notations into a single volume. I find that by transcribing these solos with professional software, there is such value in being able to see Monroe’s solos written out on the page.
